The Bailey Park Grounds Crew (BPGC) is a remarkable testament to the power of community-driven initiatives. Comprised of seven dedicated community members, this grassroots project emerged in 2020 during the pandemic. It began with the acquisition of a single commercial lawn mower, and today, it stands as a beacon of transformation and resilience within our neighborhood.

The BPGC's core mission revolves around reclaiming and revitalizing the landscape of our community. We have taken up the responsibility of mowing and maintaining more than 100 vacant lots. In doing so, we are not only breathing new life into these spaces but also ensuring they do not become sites of blight and decay.

Projects include:

  1. Blight Removal: Such as alleyway & fence line clean-up.
  2. Lawn Maintenance: Regular mowing, edging, and trimming to keep lawns neat and tidy.
  3. Planting Flowers and Shrubs: Adding colorful flowers and shrubs to enhance the aesthetic appeal of gardens and landscapes.
  4. Mulching: Applying mulch to garden beds to improve soil health, retain moisture, and suppress weeds.
  5. Tree Pruning: Trimming trees to improve their health, shape, and appearance.
  6. Tree Cutting: Cutting down dead trees.
  7. Outdoor Lighting: Installing lighting fixtures to illuminate outdoor spaces and highlight landscape features.
  8. Seasonal Cleanups: Clearing leaves, debris, and other organic matter to prepare landscapes for the changing seasons.
  9. Fertilizing and Weed Control: Applying fertilizers and weed control products to maintain healthy plants and lawns.

Beyond these essential services, the BPGC has also leveraged its resources to generate revenue by offering affordable lawn care services to local businesses, churches, and residents. Our commitment to beautification extends beyond our neighborhood, as we actively participate in alleyway cleanups for McDougall-Hunt and support other Detroit neighborhoods in their community cleanup efforts.

Our monthly cleanup initiatives have yielded impressive results, leading to the removal of over 96 tons of trash and rubbish in just one year. The dedication of our team members and their unwavering commitment to community betterment have made this achievement possible.

Perhaps most importantly, the BPGC has evolved into a valuable community resource, extending its support to other organizations and block clubs. We stand ready to collaborate, share knowledge, and work together toward the common goal of creating a cleaner, greener, and more vibrant Detroit.

The Bailey Park Grounds Crew is a testament to what can be achieved when community members come together with a shared vision and a commitment to making positive change. We look forward to continuing our mission and serving as a source of inspiration and hope for our community and beyond. Together, we are transforming our neighborhood one lot, one cleanup, and one act of service at a time. Beyond mowing and maintenance, the BP Grounds Crew provides for resident relationship building, economic skill development, and youth mentorship which is invaluable to McDougall-Hunt residents.
